United Nations Environment Programme
Tunza International Children’s•Youth Conference (UNEP TICYC) on the Environment will meet in August, 2009, in Daejeon, South Korea. Normally, the Youth Conference and Children's Conference on the Environment are held separately, but on this occasion, the preparation for the historic Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change (December 7-18), both are held together, bringing together 1,000 young people from over 100 countries to exchange opinions about how we can save the world’s environment and grapple with the economic issues.

Ages 15-24
Daejeon Convention Center
Working together with environmental experts in Daejeon, one of Asia’s premiere science clusters, the youth who gather under the auspices of the United Nations will come up with their own strategies for addressing environmental issues and building networks for serious engagement as the future responsible leaders. Results from the UNEP TICYC, which will be held back-to-back in Daejeon, will be presented at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Copenhagen, December 2009). This UN Conference will be a meeting of leaders and experts to determine what our global environmental strategy will be. This gathering in Daejeon will be the only opportunity that young people will have to contribute to that debate about the future of humanity.
UNEP Tunza International Children-Youth Conference on the Environment has a mandate to contribute to United Nations policy on the environment. The Agenda 21 adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 states that the opinions of children and youth should be incorporated in decisions of the United Nations. This conference is an opportunity for children and youth to have their voices heard by decision makers. Five hundred children (10-14) and two hundred youth (15-24) will participate in the conference.
